Knights Warner were appointed M&E contractors for this contract. This facility was constructed to provide up to 1200 meals a day and primarily consist of a main kitchen, two servery areas, front of house facilities including male, female and disabled public health facilities and back of house including the kitchen areas, fridges, freezers and staff functions.
The building is primarily a single storey building but has a first floor plant room containing all the main ventilation air handling plant and associated extract fans.
A ground floor plant room contains the gas fired heating boilers; gas fired water heaters and the associated pumps and pipework for distribution of the heating and domestic HWS/CWS systems. In addition the plant room contains a cold water storage tank, booster pumps and a softened HWS for the kitchen supply.
The heating distribution system consists of variable temperature and constant temperature heating circuits connected to radiators and heater batteries in the AHU's. The system operates as a pressurised system and is connected via a pressurisation unit.
A new mains supply is connected to the building from the existing gas main and is fitted with individual gas metering for the main plant room facilities. The gas facility for the kitchen is interlocked with a gas proving system which ensures both supply and extract air facility is established before the gas valve opens. The ventilation for the kitchen is provided by the AHU's and is connected to a combination of a ventilated ceiling and individual canopies. The main kitchen areas are also equipped with spray suppression system for areas where fryers are used.
The whole system is controlled by a BMS system working from a head computer in the mess manager's office. All elements of the plant are controlled and monitored through the BMS including all metering and temperature monitoring, including the areas covered by air conditioning plant
